### Exercise 5: The Art of Listening

In this exercise we will be practicing the art of listening. When you are in a conversation with another person, it is helpful to listen for what they are saying and how they are feeling so that you can respond appropriately. This exercise will give us an opportunity to practice active listening skills with each other as well as learn how to express our own needs and wants through verbal communication.

To begin this exercise:
– Sit comfortably in a chair, or lie down on your back if preferred (not required).
– Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths.
– Take another moment to center yourself by taking some more deep breaths as needed.
– When you are ready, open your eyes and focus on the person who is talking to you for this exercise.

The first thing we want to do is listen without interrupting them for at least 2 minutes.
To help with this, ask yourself these questions:
– What is my friend saying?
– How does it make me feel when they are speaking?
– Am I listening intently or am I distracted by other thoughts in my head?
– Is there anything else going on around us that might be affecting how well we can hear each other’s words? (e.g., music playing, traffic sounds outside)

After you have listened for 2 minutes without interrupting them, ask yourself these questions:
– What did I learn from this conversation so far?
– How does it make me feel to know that my friend is speaking with such honesty and openness about themselves?
– Am I feeling more connected to my friend because of the things they shared with me during our conversation?

Finally, ask yourself these questions:
– What do I need right now from this person or situation in order for me feel fulfilled emotionally/physically/spiritually? 💛✨
– How can I communicate my needs and wants clearly so that everyone involved feels respected? 💛✨
– Is there anything else going on around us that might be affecting how well we can hear each other’s words? (e.g., music playing, traffic sounds outside)
